ARRL EME Contest 2008 - MW part OK1KIR result

2304/2320/2424 MHz: Sri, no chance for EME anymore. Persistent terrible local QRM from wideband data BPL eliminates any EME activity on 13cm bands.

3400 MHz: Got problem with RX path in transvertor just when contest started. Trouble solved next day when OK1VAO drove back and force for another transvertor to be used as separate RX, hi.  After fixing the QRG issue with separate TX and RX own echoes finally found and at last on Sat20 at 10:10 (very close to our Moonset) worked OM/OK1DFC M/M #15 (strong QSB).

5760 MHz: On Sep20 worked at 04:18 IK2RTI 559/569, 05:18 ES5PC O/O, 05:40 F2TU 569/569, 07:05 RW1AW 569/569 and at 07:39 W5LUA 569/559. On Sep21 at 05:27 worked OK1CA 549/579. No success with DL7YC – only T/M on Sep20 and repeated sked on Sep21 resulted in nil/M.

10368 MHz:  On Sep21 at  07:15 WA6PY 559/579, 07:23 HB9BHU 569/569, 07:34 F5VKQ 559/569, 07:46 IQ4DF 579/579, 07:54 G4NNS 549/559, 07:57 W5LUA 559/569, 08:02 ES5PC 549/579, 08:14 SP7JSG 539/569, 08:20 F5JWF 559/579, 08:28 DF9QX 559/539 for #42, 08:57 F6CQK 549/519 for # 43, 09:18 WA7CJO 579/579 and at 11:10 LX1DB 569/569.

24048 MHz:  still no activity due to TX failure

Experience learned:  If our HW on all five MW bands would work properly two Moon passes is not enough to satisfy most of stations interested.

OK1KIR - první QSO OK-ES 10 GHz

Hi Tonda and others at OK1KIR, Thank you very much for this nice QSO. It was the very first ES-OK qso on # 10 GHz! It was an easy one for me but probably not so easy for you. I had a very good copy from you all the time including the 529 report you sent at the end. A good 569 EME report. The signal had noticable spectrum spreading but less than a typical aurora signal. It was also raining at my QTH! OK1CA was very slightly weaker but still very good copy. O & 559 / O reports with him. I hope to work you also during the contest on both 5.7 & 10GHz. Please let me know if you want a sked during the contest or we can try random. I will probably change to 5.7 some time Saturday afternoon or Sunday depending on activity on 10G.

Dopadlo to to takhle:

Naše signály poslouchal ještě PA0EHG. Použili jsme toto zařízení 4,5 m parabola s lineární otočnou polarizací, DB6NT LNA s WG vstupem a asi 20 W výkonu z TWT v zářiči.

Hi All, I  have to say thanks to all stations which participate the 24GHz activity day. I completed qso's with OK1KIR, VE4MA, W5LUA, made some signal exchange tests with DK7LJ,  LX1DB and receive tests with DL7YC and PA0EHG. Altough the wx was not so good as expected (lots of rain clouds but no rain) all the signals where in "O" quality and spreading around 150Hz. I am sure more ham's working on the bench to get ready and I hope we will continue this activity enlarged soon.   73 de Johannes/DF1OI

Thanks everyone for activity today....it was great!   It seems like the WX was bad for most in Europe....signals seemed to vary up and down considerably during a transmission sequence on all EU stations.  My moon noise was stable at the time.   I was able to put my new preamp in this morning and the measured NF was 0.35 dB better almost the same as the increase in moon noise up to 2.1 dB again.  I used to have 2.1 on 24192 and still need to put in a better downconverter ( which I have).   I did not improve the TX power this month...maybe next. I did have problems here. My tracking program failed about 5 times and I had to restart and check pointing.....need to improve that system.....good after a while but not reliable enough. So here is what I worked today

W5LUA 449/449, DF1OI   O/O nice signal and did see someone getting ready to tailend., DK7LJ  M/ incomplete  signal was weak and variable ( as all EU were), OK1KIR O/O  Initial # 8 ...nice signal at times but variable and CW speed too fast !, LX1DB  559/559 great signal but variable.   Sorry it took a  while to find, you as I was looking down at the mutual Doppler frequency. Its getting very exciting to think of all the regular activity on 24 GHz and next month we can possibly have PA0EHG and IQ4DF joining us Best 73 & Thanks Again Barry VE4MA

Hello, Can anyone tell me please what is the effect of rain on the 24 GHz EME signals. I have bee listening up to now and I heard signals from OK1KIR and LX1DB but very hard readable and hardly detectable on spectran. I have had today moonnoise variations from 1.2 dB max until 0.6 dB min. The signals from LX1DB and OK1KIR were very rough and spread over I don't know how much bandwith. Is this caused by the falling raindrops, I expect so. I hope that the rain will stop before W5LUA and VE4MA are on the and. Best 73's  Hans PA0EHG

Hello all, mni tks to all who participated in the great weekend party on 24 GHz EME ! OK1KIR finally got on the board completing the rig after 4 yrs (hi) and contacted all stns available today. Mar09 11:03 UT 24048.100 MHz OK1KIR - DF1OI O/O 11:34 UT 24048.100 MHz OK1KIR - DK7LJ O/O fb 14:01 UT 24048.200 MHz OK1KIR - LX1DB 449/449 16:01 UT 24048.100 MHz OK1KIR - W5LUA O/O --> 549/449 17:06 UT 24048.150 MHz OK1KIR - VE4MA O/O We are really happy for each one contact, especially mentioning the first OK-LX and OK-VE QSOs. Rotating the feed (LP) showed low influence (as perceived, not measured) except approx. +/- 10 ...15 deg from quite deep minimum at perpendicular polarization. Signals showed frequency spreading from about 100 Hz up to 200 or 300 at maximum on Spectran waterfall. Very clean (narrow) signal during QSO with DK7LJ and later on quite clean from LX1DB and especially from W5LUA. RX CW bandwidth about 1 kHz was optimum for most of signals during the day. Sun was 14.8dB morning at 09:00 UT (lightly cloudy) and 14.4 dB afternoon at el 43deg (more cloudy). Respective Moon noise was approx. 1.95 dB in both cases. Noise ratios were measured to close sky (not searching for maximum in the couldest sky like few weeks ago). Antenna beamwidth slightly over 0.2deg (hard to measure on noise sources of 0.5 deg size). Moon tracking F1EHN with incremental steps of 0.02 deg was used to point the beam to the Moon centre (tested every 10...15 min with small but necessary corrections). Changes less than +/- 0.02 dB in Moon noise when rotating the rig focus gear. OK1KIR 24GHz rig: Primary solid dish 4.5m, horn feed - linear polarization+ transverter+TWT/PS all in the focal point and rotable over +/-90deg. LNA DB6NT 1.5dB (not measured), rf pwr about 20W (not measured precisely as each one piece of WG or transition swallows 0.5 dB or more. Two WG switches in series after TWT (continuously powered up) with proper sequencing to safely operate LNA. We preliminary agreed with Per, DK7LJ to be QRV on 24GHz on the Saturday Mar15 afternoon during the DUBUS contest. Anybody else interested to arrange (agree) a time window on 24 GHz ?
